You can use my healthy living tips to make eating real, nutritious food easier and weight loss more attainable. Let’s do this.
Health Hacks for Weight Loss
When it comes to weight loss, small changes in behavior can add up to big results. We often think that we have to overhaul our whole lives in order to see a difference on the scale. In reality, weight loss is possible when small, easy-to-implement changes are made. Baby steps, people. Below you will find my top health hacks for weight loss. These strategies have allowed me to lose weight and feel better after having my second baby and I know they will work for you too. These tips alone won’t cause you to drop massive amounts of weight, but they will give you a jump start in becoming more aware of the food you consume so that you can get on track to slimming down and feeling great. Sound good?
Several of my tips involve ways in which you can slash calories from your diet. I want to be very clear that I do not believe in counting calories and fat grams like a crazy person. Nobody wants that. However, calories and fat grams do add up–especially those sneaky ones that aren’t as obvious. Food is fuel and calories and fat are good when they come from quality real food sources. My goal is to help you eliminate the calories and fat that aren’t doing you any favors.
Health Hack for Weight Loss #1: Say “Whoa” to the Salad Dressing
There’s nothing more frustrating than stuffing your face with a million salads only to find that the scale hasn’t budged–or even worse, that you’ve gained weight! It’s happened to me, and it’s no picnic. We know that eating leafy greens is great for our health and that we should work them into our diet. I don’t know about you, but I’m not a fan of eating greens on their own. Rabbit food, anyone?
In order to cut back on the salad dressing that you consume, place your greens into a large mixing bowl. Then measure 1 tablespoon of your favorite healthy salad dressing into the bowl. I love the Sir Kensington brand or you can make your own. Pinterest has some great healthy salad dressing recipes. Back to our salad dressing strategy. . . Using a spatula, toss the greens and dressing together until the greens are evenly coated. If you’re eating out, order your dressing on the side and dip the tip of your fork into it before every bite. This gives you the taste of the dressing without drowning your salad in extra calories. Same principle, different technique. This health hack for weight loss works great because it helps you to cut back on the sneaky calories that can make your healthy salad not so healthy.
Health Hacks for Weight Loss #2: Go Easy on the Jelly
I really enjoy having a piece of Ezekiel bread toast topped with fruit jelly, but I used to have a really bad habit of using way too much of the stuff. This sweet little condiment was causing me to take in extra calories and that didn’t help my weight loss goals. Here’s what to do: measure out a quarter of a teaspoon of jelly and placed it on your toast. Using a butter knife, use a scraping motion across the toast and jelly to evenly distribute the jelly over the toast. This stupid simple technique works because it gives you the taste of jelly with every bite without the extra calories.
Healthy Habit for Losing Weight #3: Parm It Up
One of my favorite health hacks for weight loss involves using powdered parmesan cheese in order to add extra flavor without extra calories and fat. You can add 1 tablespoon of cellulose-free powdered, parmesan cheese to foods like scrambled eggs, salads, and grilled veggies. Powdered parmesan cheese elevates the taste of these foods and only adds a few calories, which gives me a big bang for my buck. I aim to avoid consuming large amounts of dairy, so this tip satisfies my cheese craving without the extra calories and fat.
Healthy Habit for Losing Weight #4: Get Nutty (Milk, That Is)
If it were up to me I would use heavy cream in all of my hot beverages and sauce recipes. Seriously, I could bathe in the stuff. However, we all know that cream is very caloric, and consuming lots of it doesn’t do us any favors when it comes to weight loss. I have found great success in using unsweetened almond milk in place of cream in my hot teas and other recipes. I will admit, this substitute doesn’t work with every recipe, but it’s worth experimenting with.
Health Hack for Weight Loss #5: Make Veggies the Boss
Your mama always told you to “eat more veggies,” and she was right! Veggies are full of nutrients and fiber that help to keep us feeling full. I believe that most people fail at eating vegetables because they try to force themselves to eat ones that they hate. Don’t do this. You will come to resent the produce section at the grocery store. Focus on the vegetables you actually do like. Make it a goal for half of your plate to be filled with non-starchy vegetables such as zucchini, broccoli, spinach, and other leafy greens.
Healthy Habit for Losing Weight #6: Veg Out First
This next health hack for weight loss piggybacks on the last tip I gave you about focusing on eating your vegetables. When you sit down to a meal, do your best to eat the majority of your vegetables first. This will give your digestive system a chance to get the message that it has just received fiber and nutrients, which will help you to feel more satisfied faster. Getting your veggies in early will also help prevent you from overeating during the meal.
Healthy Habit for Weight Loss #7: Drink Up
Drink more water. I know, I know, everyone knows that they should be drinking more water. And I also know that a lot of people don’t like water. I get it, and I’m here to help! There are some creative ways to get your H2O in. Jazz up your water with lemon to give it a little flavor. Or, you can try out my popular Lemon Coconut Detox Water recipe by clicking HERE. It’s full of flavor and clean hydration.
I aim to drink a gallon of water every day. I’m not always perfect about this, but I usually at least come close to my goal by the end of the day. Shoot for the moon and reach the stars, right? One of the tools that helps me with this is my large, handy dandy stainless steel water canteen. It’s huge, but it helps me get the job done. I fill it up in the morning and sip it throughout the day.
Health Hack for Weight Loss #8: Watch the Yogurt, Yo.
If you’re a big yogurt fan, you may or may not be aware that conventional yogurt is full of sugar and other not-so-healthy ingredients. Most people eat yogurt in order to be healthy, so this can be discouraging news to learn. In order to experience weight loss and still enjoy yogurt, swap conventional yogurt for plain, unsweetened yogurt. You get bonus points if it’s organic. Stir in a natural sweetener of your choice, such Stevia, and add a few berries and walnuts on top. This combo is delicious and it will help you reach your weight loss goals without sacrificing your affinity for yogurt.
Healthy Habit for Losing Weight #9: Order Groceries Online
One of my favorite health hacks for weight loss is ordering my groceries online. We have all been guilty of impulse buys at one point or another. Shopping online allows you to purchase only what you truly need because you’re not bombarded with the strategically placed products that the grocery stores want you to buy. I can tell you that I used to work in retail and stores work very hard to get you to add extra items to your order by the ways in which they position their products. And in most cases, those items are not the healthiest choice. Shopping for groceries online also saves you money because you’re only buying what you truly need. And having the ability to keep an eye on your running total as you add items to your cart really helps you stay on budget. Not to mention, it can save you time too! #winning
